Grand Island, NE – The Principal Foundation awarded Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska a $10,000 grant for Goodwill’s Employment and Career Services Program. Employment and Career Services supports employment for people with disabilities throughout Goodwill’s 55-county service area. Employment Specialists assist people living with a behavioral health issue, acquired brain injury, developmental/intellectual disability, or substance use disorder find jobs and work successfully. Goodwill staff also assist others, including people living in poverty and those with criminal records. Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska is seeking individuals and families to become Shared Living Providers for individuals living with developmental disabilities. A Shared Living Provider opens their home to a person living with a developmental disability, providing them a caring place to live and teaching daily activities of living and independent living skills. A person living with the disability moves into the home of the Shared Living Provider and becomes a part of their family. Andrew had just been released from jail and had only a grocery sack of clothes to his name. He didn’t have a safe place he could stay, and was at risk of finding himself back in an unhealthy situation. Through working with his Probation Officer, Andrew was referred to Goodwill’s Transitional Living Program. Sam battled drug and alcohol addiction. His family and neighbors called the police multiple times in one month. Sam made the decision to seek inpatient treatment. After completing the program, Sam began working with a Goodwill Community Support Worker to help him transition back into society and help support him in his recovery journey. Instead of going back to the environment that he left and risk relapse, Sam’s community support worker was able find him a different apartment and give him the fresh start he needed. Matt found himself on hard times, with a mountain of bills, no gainful employment and on probation. He found his way to Employment and Career Services and completely turned his life around. Determining the right job match, Goodwill advocated for Matt to work at a job where he would experience success. He has completed all probation requirements, is successfully employed, has his own transportation, a safe place to live, healthcare and a better quality of life. He is enjoying his sense of belonging to the community and the respect he has for himself.
McCook, NE – Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska is pleased to announce the opening of its newest store and donation drop off in McCook, located at the intersection of Highway 34 and 83 in Westview Plaza. The store’s sales floor offers 7,200 square feet to allow for donations of clothing, housewares, electronics, books and other items that will be sold at bargain prices.
