Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska Celebrates National Developmental Disabilities Month 2026 “We’re Here. Then, Now, Always.”

March is National Developmental Disabilities Month (DDAM), and Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska is proud to celebrate with the theme “We’re Here. Then, Now, Always.” This annual observance highlights the contributions, resilience, and value of individuals living with developmental disabilities, while reaffirming our commitment to inclusion, opportunity, and community support.

National Developmental Disabilities Month was first designated by Congress in 1987 and formally proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan to raise awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities and to encourage greater understanding, opportunities, and inclusion in all aspects of community life.

As we begin Developmental Disability Awareness Month this March, let us remember that every day, we’re inspired by the incredible talents, resilience, and perspectives that people with disabilities bring to our community. Each person is amazing in their own way, and it’s vital that we continue breaking down barriers so everyone can thrive. While we work daily to foster understanding and inclusion, this month shines a special light on the importance of raising awareness and strengthening relationships. We encourage everyone to take time to learn more about disabilities, get involved in advocacy, and participate in community events. Together, we can help make our neighborhoods more accessible, welcoming, and supportive for all!

Laura Schenk, Director of Developmental Disability Services

During the month of March, all round-up donations in our retail stores will be directed to support individuals in our Developmental Disability Services.

At Goodwill, our Developmental Disability Services are designed to empower individuals to build confidence, increase independence, and participate meaningfully in their communities. Our dedicated team works with participants to strengthen life and social skills, support choice-making, and celebrate personal success.

For nearly four decades, DDAM has reminded us of the importance of embracing diversity and breaking down barriers. At Goodwill, this commitment is central to everything we do — from person-centered support services to employment and community engagement opportunities.
